The Importance of Self-Affirmation: A Look at the Impact of Positive Self-Image on Health

here are a lot of health benefits when adolescents affirm themselves. Self-affirmation is so much better than negative self-affirmation. When adolescents engage in self-affirmation, they usually tend to have a positive self-image and their teen years are much less riddled with unhealthy self-criticism. But even more than that, if adolescents affirm their selves, they are affirming their body, mind and spirit. And there is nothing better for adolescents to gain overall health and well-being. Not only that, if adolescents instill such positive habits during their teen years, they will be able to reap the health benefits of such a positive attitude for the rest of their lives. Here are a few benefits of practising positive self-affirmation.

1. Adolescents will learn to accept themselves more fully. There is nothing better for a teenager than to totally and completely accept him/herself. Self-affirmation can help them to achieve this more fully. Think of how much better adolescents will feel when they affirm themselves at all times.

2. Adolescents will be able to appreciate who they are and assert themselves in real situations. Each adolescent is unique. And when adolescents appreciate themselves, they stand up tall and walk taller as well. There is nothing healthier for us or our self-esteem.

3. Adolescents will be able to have a positive body image. Adolescence is usually plagued by negative body image. Adolescents tend to think that they should always lose ten or twenty pounds. They will never take the time to fully accept who they are and how we look. By affirming themselves, they could be healthier in the mind, body and spirit.
4. Adolescents will not be overly critical of themselves nor compare themselves to others. Each adolescent will have his/her own eccentricities. But when adolescents take the time to affirm themselves, they'll accept their flaws and move past them in the best possible way that they know how.

If an adolescent isn't critical of herself, (s)he will feel good about herself, regardless if she's not a size six. That feeling of self-acceptance will help the adolescent feel much healthier and make her adolescence much more enjoyable. I think it is time for adolescents to stop criticizing themselves and to practise self-affirmation. Not only will they be healthier as a result. They will also feel much more able to excel at whatever it is that they set their minds and hearts to.
